Poulnabrone Dolmen is located in a limestone plateau so it gives visitors a real sense of what the Burren is all about. It is also the oldest dated megalithic monument in Ireland according to the Burren Geopark information.
Excavation has shown that the site was continually in use for a period of 600 years about 5000 years ago and the remains of approximately 20 people were found in the main chamber.
The site has been greatly improved since I first started coming to the Burren. Visitors can now find out all the information about the site on the boards along the pathway to the dolmen.
The dolmen is located just 1km from Caherconnell Stone Fort and close to Leminagh castle. Both are must sees if you are in the area.
