This is by far the easiest and most accessible hike in the Ballyvaughan area. When I worked at Aillwee, people used to ask me how long it took to climb the mountain and I’d say “30 minutes or so” I guess it was more ‘or so’ than 30 minutes because it will take you a solid hour and a bit to get to the very top! Apologies to anyone who I duped with false information!!!
Location:
Easy access to the mountain is through Aillwee. If you travel by car, tell the gate attendant that you are just going up to the mountain and then proceed to the top car park.
If you are travelling by foot from the village, enter the site and go through the Woodland walk which brings you to the top car park and then you can proceed to the mountain walk.
*Please be aware that the gates of the park close at a certain time so be sure to check with staff before going up. As ever, we have a leave no trace policy in the Burren so please take you rubbish with you.
Cost:
Parking is free on the site.
Aillwee Mountain is often overlooked because it is on the Aillwee site. However, it is in my opinion a great and easy climb that rewards you with panoramic views over Ballyvaughan and Galway Bay.
The mountain is riddled with ridges so just when you think you are at the top, there is another ridge. It could possibly take an hour or so to make it to the very top. The view at every stage are amazing and I even caught a beautiful rainbow on my most recent visit.

On you return, consider making a stop to the tearoom for a well deserved coffee or the Farmshop where you can enjoy coffee AND Burren Gold cheese or some fudge that they make on site.
