Another great hike for anyone visiting Ballyvaughan that does not have access to a car. The trail head is easily accessible by foot and this hike offered some of the best views of Ballyvaughan and Galway Bay.

Location; Follow the R477 out of Ballyvaughan along the coast road towards Fanore. After approximately 2km, you will find a left hand turn signed ‘Cappabhaile’ Follow this road until you pass the first house on the left. Just up from that house on the right hand side is a gate. This is the start of the path.

What do I need? You will need a good pair of walking boots, windproof jacket, hat or ear coverings for the top, camera, snacks, water, mobile phone.

Along the path

The path will bring you to the top of Cappanawalla and you can enjoy amazing scenic views of Ballyvaughan and Galway bay.

In April/May the wild flowers of the Burren are in abundance along the path and we saw everything from Gentians to Purple Orchids to bluebells. As you get closer the top, you will notice less flowers as the landscape becomes more rocky and exposed.

Gentians.

The exposed Burren landscape is truly breathtaking and at this point you can turn around and return or go down the other side which brings you on to another part of the Burren Way. I wouldn’t go down the other side unless you were 100% about your location and how to return to the village.

Exposed limestone on the top.

It is important to note that this is farmland and you will likely meet cows on your journey. Stay well back and do not disturb them in any way. As always, we have a ‘leave no trace‘ policy in the Burren so always take your rubbish away with you and do NOT take any flowers as souvenirs!
