Queen Maeve, once the ruler of Connaught is reportedly buried at the top of Knocknarea, Co. Sligo. Maeve was known as a fierce warrior and competitor as evidenced in the legend of the cattle raid of Cooley.

She had many husbands and was said to look for three traits, no meanness, jealously or fear. Often her husbands would be challenged to a battle to the death for her hand in marriage!

Trail location:

This trail starts at Sligo RFC. There is an honestly box and everyone is encouraged to donate €2 to the upkeep on the grounds.

Cross the road and start the walk. I recommend wearing proper hiking shoes/boots. Although it is ok in fine weather, the boards are all wood and can get dangerous when wet.

Information board at start of walk
Start of walk and in my opinion, the hardest bit. I was DYING by the middle of this section!!!
Once you get to the top of the steps it is level for a while.
Then there’s a board walk through the woods. Be careful here in wet weather. The wood part is a bit boring.
Once you clear the boards, it’s a straight walk to the top. You get great views over Sligo.

You can walk around the cairn and explore several trails leading off it. Then follow the same route back to the start. The signs describe it as a “strenuous walk” which is true but if you take your time you can make it, regardless of fitness level. It takes only 1 hour to the summit.

This was a really enjoyable walk and there were only a handful of people doing the trail. I would recommend snacks and water. There are several benches along the way but no bins so take your rubbish home with you!
